Semiofoor

Through his academic background Rick Keijzer became interested in the concept of “Semiofoor” (Krzysztof Pomian). Literally this means “bearer of meaning.” The value and meaning of an object are determined by the history attached to it: for example, museums are filled with pottery shards, the plastic of the past, worthless except for the historical value given to it.

In his work, Rick investigates the properties of objects, potential Semiofoors, and changes the context so the viewer sees these objects in a new light. The use of precious metals in combination with rusty objects is a way to make the beholder aware of the potential “value” of an object.
